Tutorial: Joining Mid-Release

What this tutorial covers

This tutorial shows how to get up to speed on an active Wire engagement that you did not start. It covers reading the release state, surfacing the decision history, recovering meeting context from Fathom transcripts, and planning your first session — using a handover scenario between two consultants on a live wealth management project.

Marcus has 30 minutes before his first session with the client data team. He needs to understand what has been built, what decisions were made, and what the next command is.

Understanding the current state

Marcus opens his terminal in the engagement repository and runs /wire:start:

That gives him the shape of the engagement in ten seconds. He follows it with /wire:status for the complete picture — artifact versions, approval dates, reviewer names, and open questions:

Priya Shah is the data reviewer; James Okafor handles architecture sign-offs. Marcus notes the two open questions. OQ-3 (CASS 9 retention scope) may affect what fields appear in the semantic layer.

Reading the decisions log

Wire agents record non-obvious modelling choices to decisions.md as they work. Marcus reads it with /wire:decisions:

Three decisions stand out. The daily snapshot grain is a hard constraint — the Temenos system simply does not produce intraday data. The surrogate key choice is standard Wire convention. The instrument_type_code exclusion is critical: the field cannot appear in any shared dataset, which means it cannot appear in the Looker semantic layer either.

Reading the execution log

The decisions log shows what was decided. The execution log shows what was run:

Sarah closed the session on 11 February after orchestration was approved. The log sequence makes the handover point unambiguous. Marcus can see that nothing has been run since — there is no partial semantic layer work in progress.

Meeting context

The decisions log shows what agents recorded. But analysts and clients discuss things in calls that never make it into formal decisions. Marcus pulls the Fathom transcript context:

The data model review transcript surfaces a specific statement from James Okafor about instrument_type_code. Marcus checks decisions.md again — the field exclusion is recorded there from 2026-01-28, so the agent did capture it. The transcript adds confirmation of who said it and when. If it had been missing from decisions.md, Marcus would add it manually before starting any generation work.

This is exactly the kind of institutional knowledge that disappears in a handover. It is not in any Jira ticket, not in any email. The Fathom transcript is the only reliable record.

Planning the next session

Marcus now knows what was built, what decisions were made, and what constraints apply to the semantic layer. He runs session planning:

Auto-delegation

When you see -> [auto-delegated to X agent], the main session has routed that command to a specialist subagent automatically — no extra steps needed. The specialist runs with a focused brief rather than the full engagement context, which typically produces sharper domain-specific output. Review commands (*-review) always stay in the main session and require your direct input.

The agent reads decisions.md before generating — this is standard behaviour for all Wire agents. The compliance decision Marcus found in the Fathom transcript surfaces immediately because it was already in decisions.md. The field never appears in any generated LookML view. Marcus did not need to brief the agent explicitly; the decision log did it automatically.

Key lesson

decisions.md is the institutional memory of the engagement. Every Wire agent reads it before generating output. Every agent appends to it when it makes a non-obvious choice. When you join a release mid-way, reading decisions.md before running any command is the single most important step — it prevents you from generating artifacts that contradict decisions already made and approved. The Fathom meeting context provides the narrative behind those decisions. The decisions file is the primary continuity mechanism.
